Ctool-bag

Better update coming later in the day. Till then, let's discuss this:

This is really just a test print that someone printed hastily, right?

[Insert amazing transition here]
What's the worst excuse you've heard someone give for a late paper?

Edit: today I found a similar printout that said "we can't find gobluewolverine.com," which would support the theory that this is only a test print.

I haven't heard a lot of horrible excuses, but I've seen a whole lot of people give the "my [x], so can I email you the paper later today?"

where x=
-computer exploded
-printer broke
-paper is in my room i know exactly where it is

GSIs must be wise to this, right?

That paper in the room excuse is actually a pretty authentic one, I think. I hope the "printer broke" never gets anyone anywhere just because of all the printers on campus.

"I was studying for the midterm" is kind of a common one.

My college has this thing where each student has their own little corner of the servers to save things to, and every computer connected to the school's server can access it. I've had a lot of teachers, after hearing the "Well, it's done, but..." excuse, say "Oh, that's no biggie, just pull it up on my computer and print it out."

Needless to say, that weeds out a lot of the obvious liars.

I realize mistakes happen Dana, but I don't think that they happen as often as students use them as excuses.

If I spend all night working on a six page paper thats a quarter of my grade, no way am I going to forget it at home.

I like the way they do things at Stormy's college. I think if I were a GSI I'd be inclined to say something like "Well it's really important that I have your paper today, so would you mind quick going home to get it?" Or ask for it like an hour after class is done.

Stormy, we have that too. Every UM student is allocated 1GB of online storage space, accessible via sftp programs or even through a web interface.

But it's not really utilized the way that stormy tells it though. (a shame)

To be charitable for a moment, typing just "ctools" into some web browsers will attempt to navigate to www.ctools.com. Although when I tried it just now, hooked up to the *MSU* network, ctools.umich.edu came up without a hitch.

I had a professor observe privately once that "more grandmas die during finals season than any other time of year..." GSIs and profs are indeed wise to the many tricks of the procrastinator. My preferred policy is: you try to turn it in late without talking to me first, you lose points. Period. I'm a huge procrastinator too but this is tough love here.
